Among the most important evaluations carried out in the project that studies hazards, vulnerabilities and risks in the face of phytosanitary disasters, also called Epifitia, is social vulnerability, a variable to a certain extent subjective, but one that greatly influences the development of robust agriculture free of pests and other dangers that may affect it.

This was explained by Javier González García, deputy director of research and head of the project led by the Center for Environmental Engineering and Biodiversity of Ciego de Ávila, CIBA, who pointed out that this study includes workers and the general public directly or indirectly related to the crops.

The specialist added that the results showed a vulnerability between medium and high, which indicates that, although both workers and residents are aware of the possible threats, they are often unaware of the mechanisms to adequately face them, which offers important elements to contain the problem.

The study of the dangers, vulnerabilities and risks in the face of phytosanitary disasters, will provide Avilanian agriculture with a new work tool aimed at guaranteeing its protection against contingencies that may affect it, thus reducing its vulnerabilities and risks, and safeguarding the people’s food and the country’s economy.
