The great wetland in the north of Ciego de Ávila, second in size and importance in our country and a Ramsar site since 2002, has great relevance for the municipality of Morón for all that it contributes to this territory given its intrinsic characteristics, fundamentally related to with the hydrological situation that it presents.
The Master of Science Daylon Fundora Caballero, environmental specialist of the territorial sub-delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the province of Ciego de Avila, explained that among its most notable benefits stands out the possibility of assimilating the floods produced by the rains that have fallen even in other municipalities of the province.
At the same time, it is an important source of primary production with a direct influence on other ecosystems, it is the habitat of numerous species, both migratory and autochthonous, and decisive processes for the country’s economy are inserted in it, such as tourism development, the activity of fishing, livestock, agriculture and forestry.
That is why conserving and protecting the wetland is essential for our lives, and this is part of the very knowledge that we all must have about it, being aware of its enormous natural wealth that also belongs to us and that we do not always value in its fair measure, he concluded Founder Caballero.
