The Centro Oeste Ecological Reserve of Cayo Coco constitutes one of the two protected areas present in the northern keys of Ciego de Ávila, together with the outstanding natural element Dunas de Playa Pilar, hence its protection is vital due to the rich biodiversity it houses.

This was announced by Yosmany Almarales Morales, head of the Environmental Education project belonging to the Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna in this area of ​​Avilanian geography, whose work has become one of the key tools to guarantee such protection.

According to Almarales Morales, this ecological reserve has 36,040 hectares, more than half of them in marine areas, with the presence of more than 200 species of birds and 30 reptiles, as well as the highest sand dunes in the tourist destination. after Dunas de Playa Pilar, with approximately 14 meters high.

Consequently, the work of the Environmental Education project in this protected area managed by the Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, gains more and more importance in order to guarantee the conservation of a very vulnerable ecosystem due to the tourist development that it experiences.
