The Centro Oeste Ecological Reserve of Cayo Coco constitutes one of the two protected areas present in the northern keys of Ciego de Ávila, together with the outstanding natural element Dunas de Playa Pilar, hence its protection is vital due to the rich biodiversity it houses.
