Several were the results obtained by the Center for Environmental Bioengineering and Biodiversity of the Avilanian municipality of Morón during the year 2022 in the investigations associated with the project “Bases for a future integrated environmental management with an ecosystem approach in the Great Northern Wetland of Ciego de Ávila ( GHNCA) and its adaptation to Climate Change”.
According to the statements of the Master of Science Yamilé Jiménez Peña, director of the institution, among the most important are the determination of current anthropogenic and natural damage through actions such as the statistical processing of meteorological information, updating the map geological from detailed reviews of GEOCUBA and the update of the historical contributions of groundwater to the wetland.
Likewise, work was done on updating the hydrological parameters of the superficial basins with the results of the processing of rain in the period 2001-2022, the evaluation of the behavior of the aquifer in the hydrogeological sectors related to the wetland and the updating of information on the flora and terrestrial vegetation in areas of this ecosystem, in the protected area Centro Oeste Cayo Coco Ecological Reserve.
Jiménez Peña concluded that, finally, the information on the socioeconomic activities that take place within the wetland was compiled and a georeferenced database by components was generated, all of which will contribute to the development of future conservation actions and management of natural resources within the wetland.
