The role of the Ministry of Economy and Planning (MEP) in fundamental tasks such as economic revival, with the recovery of activity levels in the productive sectors of goods and services, and social indicators in areas in which we are a world reference, such as health and education, was highlighted by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
The Head of State led the meeting to review the organization’s work in 2023, and the evaluation of its projections for this year, a meeting that was also led by the member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, and the member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Party, Joel Queipo Ruiz, head of its Productive Economic department.
Díaz-Canel praised the strength of an institution characterized by the talent and dedication of its workers, which combines the experience of specialists with many years of work and the capacity of a youth that has demonstrated solid preparation.
The head of the organization, Joaquín Alonso Vázquez, addressed the projections for this year, which include leading the implementation of the National Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030; the conduct of the Government plan to re-boost the economy; and the implementation of the Macroeconomic Stabilization Program with the required gradualness.
Priorities are to advance in the improvement of annual planning, transform the Plan’s control system with a more integrative approach, and achieve efficient management of the investment process, promoting the development of capabilities at all levels.
Special attention will also be paid to progress in the comprehensive transformation of the socialist state company and achieving its effective link with the rest of the actors in the economy; and energize research processes based on the year’s priorities and objectives, among other projections.
Marrero Cruz underlined the role of the MEP as the general staff of the country’s economy, as an organization that cuts across the entire economy and society, he said.
We are developing in a war economy, he reflected, and stated that the challenge is to find our own solutions. “The Cuban economy has its own characteristics, which forces us to look for different answers,” he emphasized.
