The Great Northern Wetland of Ciego de Ávila, second in size and importance in our country, received the status of Ramsar site in the year 2002, a recognition of the exceptional characteristics of this ecosystem and, above all, the management that is makes of the same.
This was explained by Master of Science Daylon Fundora Caballero, head of the Department of Natural Resources of the Environment Subdelegation in Ciego de Ávila, who added that this category is granted by UNESCO, and in Cuba it is held by several wetlands, among which are also the Ciénaga de Zapata appears.
According to the specialist, several of the protected areas of the Avilanian province are part of the wetland, as is the case of the Central and Western Ecological Reserve of Cayo Coco, and the Loma de Cunagüa and El Venero Wildlife Refuges, hence the importance of its care in order to guarantee the safeguarding of all the biodiversity it treasures.
Today the Great Northern Wetland of Ciego de Ávila constitutes one of the most important ecosystems of the central province, to which organizations such as the Institute of Hydraulic Resources, the Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, and the Ministry of Science pay taxes. , Technology and the Environment, in order to protect a natural space on which human life also depends.
